VIEWING ROOM #01

VIEWING ROOM

Jonathan Huxley

Where are we ?

19 NOVEMBER – 12 DECEMBER 2020

On your screen a tiny magnified image of a frenzied kiss completes the series of paintings collectively titled : WHERE ARE WE?

Is this a first kiss? Now an illegal act of intimacy under the threat of contagion?

Navigate to the start. A scene of cinematic proportions exposes a vast manifestation of humanity. A mass gathering. Last year a way of life, now a cause of death?

Jonathan Huxley’s new exhibition remained in his London studio.

You cannot go

It is not safe.

The work will be delivered to you virtually.

You may interact with it from the comparative safety of your own home.

Huxley studied at the Royal Academy School of Art where the approach to observational drawing was rigorous. Lockdown afforded him the time to return to this disciplined practice after years of experimentation. He studied photographs of anonymous laughing heads to capture the unnerving ambiguity of extreme human emotion when seen frozen.

“I was reading interviews with Francis Bacon. Who can resist his obsession with the human predicament? He never tackled laughter. I thought I would try.”

Zoom in for an up close and personal view of unregulated human behaviour.
As a memory of some things that we can no longer do.

Things we weren’t allowed to do;

and things we’ve done anyway.
